Birth Injuries: Treatment of Vulval Hematoma
If your midwife or doctor suspects that you are suffering from a vulval hematoma, ie a painful collection of blood in the vulval area, they will refer you to hospital immediately as it is necessary to stop the bleeding as quickly as possible in order to prevent shock. You will also be treated with appropriate medication and connected to a drip if necessary.
Treatment of the vulval hematoma will require an incision be made in the affected area so that blood that has collected can be removed. Any bleeding blood vessels will then be identified and tied to stop the bleeding. Stitches will then be used to close the open wound and a drain may be put in place for 24 hours so than any residual blood can flow away. You will most likely be prescribed a course of antibiotics to help prevent an infection developing and your progress will be observed. In some cases a blood transfusion may be necessary, but in the majority of cases once the repairs are undertaken and healing has occured, there will be no further problems expected.
