Birth Injuries: Vaginal Tears
As with perineal tears, vaginal tears can also occur during the second stage of labour. Vaginal tears can effect any part of the vaginal wall, but are most likely to happen between the lateral and posterior walls. Although most of these tears are not very serious and require little or no treatment, in some instances the tears may be so deep that the inner vaginal muscles are exposed.
Tears within the vagina can also happen in the area around the urethra, the area where urine is excreted. This type of tear is called a paraurethral tear. This tear can bleed profusely due to the large blood supply in the area; as a consequence, treatment will need to be carried out to stop the bleeding and to repair the tear as a matter of urgency.
