Signs of Labor - Rupture of Membranes (Waters Breaking)

The sac of water surrounding your baby may begin to leak very gradually in the weeks leading up to the birth of your baby. Alternatively, it may burst with a sudden gush of water everywhere! Or it may not happen at all and may have to be ruptured in hospital during the pushing stage of labor.

Whilst frightening, your waters breaking doesn't always mean labor has started. However, if you do notice any leaking or a sudden gush of water you should contact your midwife or maternity unit.

If the water is stained a yellow or brown colour, you need to contact your maternity unit or midwife immediately as your baby may have passed some meconium, his first bowel movement, in utero and he may be in distress. Meconium can affect your baby's breathing and he will need immediate attention if this is the case. However, as it is something that often happens, try not to worry too much as your caregivers will know exactly what to do to help him.
