Breastfeeding Problems - Sore/ Cracked Nipples

Sore or Cracked Nipples can occur if your baby is positioned incorrectly at the breast. The baby may be sucking at the nipple only rather than the areola and nipple. Often the only action required is to correct the positioning.

Ask your midwife or health-visitor for help with positioning if required. You can also apply some nipple protection cream to soothe and protect the sore area.

If nipples become very cracked or even bleed a little you can further protect them with breast shells until they are healed. In rare cases cracked nipples can lead to a breast abscess so always ensure your nipples are kept clean, dry and comfortable between feeds. Sore nipples can also be a sign of thrush.
