Breastfeeding Stories - Getting it Right
by Marie
I was determined when I was pregnant with my second child that I was going to nail breastfeeding this time around. It just didn't work out with my first child; I gave up after 3 weeks of tearful attempts and having an C section really just made me quite weak. I was so upset and really felt that I had failed Lauren. I so had my heart set on breastfeeding her and no one around me at the time understood why it meant so much to me. I was successful second time round with my son, (13 months and still breastfeeding him!).
The general impression you are given before you start breastfeeding is that it is going to be really easy. It is not easy for a lot of women. I very much struggled to get the latch correct, my boobs were in such a mess and it was a very painful experience. Mainly because I did not get the correct support and advice that I needed. Being very big busted it was hard to see what was going on; with a newborn and big boobs you worry that you are going to smoother them if you don’t have a clue what you are doing. After lots and lots of perseverance and watching video clips online of how to get a good latch, I got there. Once I got the latch sorted breastfeeding was a breeze and by far one of my proudest accomplishments!
In many ways breastfeeding has changed my life, so much so that I have actually changed my whole career around breastfeeding. I am a web designer by profession and left the corporate world behind to become a WAHM (work at home Mum) when my daughter was a year old... I was doing freelance web design and just felt that there was more I could do with my skills, I just had not worked out what I wanted to do yet. I love finding useful and beautiful gifts for friends and I really love designing in a feminine way. The little work I was getting very boring and corporate, clients also wanted endless meetings and telephone calls, which just wasn’t practifcal. Getting to the point, after I had Toby and was ready and needing to return to work I discovered something called a nursing cover which I found invaluable when feeding him in public.
Siince then I have launched and designed my own website which started off selling nursing covers and breastfeeding solutions. Sweet Nursing is now growing and I have put so much work into making it work and I am just trilled to be working with other Mums who share my work ethics and beliefs and to be selling products that help other parents. I now work part time but I still get to spend more time with the children than I would if I had a full time job.
Moral of my story is don’t give up, keep going and it will all be worth it! Breastfeeding really will change your life; if you continue to breastfeed you will always treasure those special and very personal moments with your baby. This is a relationship that no one else can have with your baby and it is so rewarding, a bond that can never be broken.
