Breastfeeding and Jaundice

Lots of babies are a little jaundiced at birth. This particular type of jaundice is caused by a build-up of bilirubin levels in the baby’s liver. Breastfeeding can help to disperse this.

Another solution is to try sitting your baby in a sunny spot for a few minutes every day as Vitamin D from sunlight helps clear it up. Never leave your baby unattended or in direct sunlight however, as there is a risk of burning.

Your midwife, health-visitor and doctor will all check for jaundice shortly after birth and will advise you if medical treatment is required.
