Pain Relief During Childbirth - Doula

Whilst obviously not a medical form of pain relief during childbirth, a Doula is a privately hired and trained professional who stays with a laboring and birthing mother providing a listening ear and words of encouragement.

For women with a squeamish partner or whose partner is unable to attend the birth and for single mothers, a Doula can be a great source of comfort during labour and delivery - although their services can be expensive. Depending upon your personal requirements and circumstances, some doulas can even be hired to stay with you in the days before labor and for the first few weeks afterwards to help out!
