Pain Relief During Childbirth - Meptid (Meptazinol)
(The complete article covering all the options for pain relief during labor is available as a Podcast)
Meptid (Meptazinol) is a strong opiod painkiller which can be given early on during the first stage of labor.
However, as a relatively new drug, it is not widely available and this is something you may wish to discuss with your consultant if you are intending on using it.
Like a Spinal, only one dose can be given during labor and it often causes sickness and dizziness. Offering many of the same advantages as Pethidine but without the same level of addictiveness, Meptid is an effective form of pain relief during labor. Plus, as an ordinary analgesic painkiller, it is believed that it does not affect baby's breathing as much as Pethidine.
