Asbestosis Prognosis

Asbestosis, if serious, can shorten the life span of the sufferer as it places quite a strain on their health. Because it takes so long to develop, it is expected that the coming years will see an increase in the number of people diagnosed with it.

Asbestosis sufferers are at an increased risk of developing both lung cancer and mesothelioma and these too can develop many years after exposure to

Lung cancer prognosis is very poor with only around 10% of people being cured although treatment can help increase life expectancy for many years.

Mesothelioma prognosis is also extremely low and almost 85% of those diagnosed with the condition will die within the following three years.

Mesothelioma accounts for around 1800 deaths a year in the UK and as with asbestosis this figure is expected to increase in the future.
