Birth Injuries: Cerebral Palsy Symptoms
Cerebral palsy is not always suspected immediately and it can take some time before it becomes apparent that a child is affected by it. During routine checks a baby suffering from CP may show some signs of abnormal tone, ie stiff or floppy limbs, and their posture may be unusual; this may be an early indicator that something is not quite right.
Co-ordination problems may be noticeable leading to problems with walking, feeding, talking, writing and dressing. There may be obvious coordination and balance problems and the child may experience difficulty controlling and maintaining his posture. Some sufferers also have weakened eyesight and hearing. Around a third of children and young people with CP may also have epilepsy.
Delayed motor milestones such as crawling, walking, speaking and social interaction, alongside weak or paralysed limbs and an abnormal gait, will usually alert your doctor to the fact that CP needs to be investigated. Therefore it is important that you attend all milestone appointments you receive to see your health visitor and doctor.
