Birth Injuries: Treatment of Vaginal Tears
If you have suffered vaginal tears during the second stage of labour you will require treatment to help repair the damage.
After any birth, it is very important that the vagina is thoroughly examined under a bright light to check for any tearing or damage that may have occured. During this examination, you will probably be required to use stirrips so that the midwife or doctor can thoroughly check the vaginal area.
Any repairs that are required should be carried out as soon as possible and your caregivers will explain to you what needs to be done, how it will be carried out, who will perform the repairs and the possible outcomes of treatment. You will also be warned about potential problems and advised on appropriate aftercare.
If repairs are deemed necessary, the region will be numbed with a local anaesthetic and you will be offered gas and air to help relax you.
