Cervical Cancer Causes

Although the cause of cervical cancer isn't really yet known, there appear to be a number of factors which may make it more likely. However, that said, some women who have suffered cervical cancer do not actually appear to have these factors involved.

What is known however is that 99% of cervical cancers appear to be linked to the human papilloma virus, otherwise known as HPV.

HPV is a common virus, often passed on to others during sexual intercourse. Although in itself HPV causes no symptoms, it is from the same family of viruses that causes genital warts. In most cases, the immune system rids itself of the infection so that the majority of women are never aware they've had it in the first place. It is also worth noting that just because a woman may have suffered from genital warts in the past it does not make her more likely to suffer from cervical cancer. In fact, cervical cancer is actually caused by a different strain of HPV altogether than that of genital warts.

However, you may be more prone to developing cervical cancer if you begin having sex very early, smoke, have been taking the contraceptive pill for an extended period of time, have a weakened immune system or if either you or your partner have had many sexual partners.
