Credit Cards

If you are considering applying for a credit card then you need to go into it with your eyes wide open. Although credit cards are great in that they offer extra consumer protection for you when making purchases, they can also cause a lot of unnecessary debt to build up.

Unless you know you will be clearing off the outstanding balance on your credit card every month, a credit card can be a very expensive way to borrow money and therefore should always be used with caution.

Consider why you want a credit card in the first place as you may actually be better off approaching a bank for a loan instead. However, if you know you will need a credit card for business expenses or for frequent online purchases then although very useful, you should think about setting up a direct debit to ensure you clear your balance every month. Otherwise you will accrue interest on your spending which can very quickly add up and over time grow out of proportion to the money you spent in the first place.

If, after careful consideration, you still feel that you require a credit card then you should carefully consider which type of credit card best suits your needs (See, Choosing a Credit Card) and if you have any trouble securing credit work out why and try to improve your credit score if necessary.
