How Asbestos Causes Mesothelioma
Asbestos contains many tiny fibres which are easily inhaled by those people who come into contact with it. These fibres then find their way into the pleura which line the lungs. This causes irritation to the pleura and damages the pleural cells and the resulting illness is known as pleural mesothelioma.
Although the abdominal form of mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma is not yet fully understood, it is believed that if a sufferer coughs the asbestos fibres may then be swallowed leading to mesothelioma in the peritoneal lining.
If you have been exposed to asbestos at some point in your past, your family may also be at risk. Asbestos fibres can stick to the clothes worn by those people who have worked in an asbestos environment and as a result research has shown that you may be at an increased risk of developing mesothelioma.
