What exactly is Term Life Insurance?

Term Life Insurance only covers the insured person against death during a specified period of time, ie a specified term.  The policy only pays out for death or, in some cases terminal illness, within the insured term.

Whilst term life insurance is cheaper it's worth noting your dependants will only receive a payout if you die with a specific period of time and if you don't then you get nothing back! On the other hand, whole life insurance guarantees a payout whenever you die, whenever that may be.

In general, term life insurance is usually recommended to younger people who wish to arrange life insurance cover for a set period of time, ie perhaps to cover the time that they have children in school. Premiums tend to be quite a bit lower which can be useful if money is tight as is often the case with young families.
