Medical Reasons for an Emergency (unplanned) C-Section
In some instances, despite the best efforts of all involved in your baby's birth, it becomes necessary to have an unplanned or emergency c-section.
During your labor you may be informed that a c-section is necessary for one or more of the following reasons:
The baby's heart rate is abnormal and the baby may not be considered fit for a vaginal delivery.
The umbilical cord falls through the cervix, putting baby's oxygen supply at risk.
The placenta tears away from the uterine wall. This too can interrupt the baby's oxygen supply.
The cervix stops dilating, meaning the baby will not be able to pass through it into the vagina.
You are showing signs of the genital herpes virus which may infect your baby during a vaginal delivery.
Obviously, if you are having an unplanned c-section you will not have an opportunity to discuss it in detail with your consultant. However, after the delivery you will be able to ask questions and discuss the reasons for your c-section.
