Medical Reasons for a Planned C-Section

There are a number of medical reasons why you may require a planned (elective) c-section.

You are more likely to require a c-section if:

Your placenta is lying very low or is covering the cervix.

You are expecting more than one baby.

Your baby is very large and you have already experienced a complicated vaginal birth.

Your baby has a know defect or illness which means a vaginal birth would be risky.

Your baby is lying in an awkward position such as in the breech position (bottom first), or he is in a transverse (sideways) position.

You have had previous surgery on your uterus.

You have already had more than c-section, or you have had a c-section with a vertical incision.

You suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes or another serious health condition.

You are HIV positive.

Before the operation goes ahead your consultant will explain to you why he feels a cesarian delivery is necessary and you will be given an opportunity to to ask questions and discuss any concerns you may have. Your consultant will also want to know about any medications you are currently taking and any allergies you may have.
