Shape of the Eye During Pregnancy

During pregnancy the body is subject to extensive change. These changes might include putting on extra weight, having moods swings and aching feet. A less known but common change is altered shape of the eye. For those who wear contact lenses this might cause additional discomfort.

Many women are well prepared for some of the changes their body is about to go through when pregnant. Most people are familiar with pregnancy symptoms like morning sickness, enlarged appetite for sugary foods and back pains. A less known and possibly not so obvious change that might occur is the altering shape of the cornea.

This change is minor compared to some other changes pregnant women experience, and is in most cases goes unnoticed. This stems from irregularities in blood pressure, and the alteration of the cornea is not sudden but progresses over time.

While possibly not as dramatic as other symptoms and discomforts associated with pregnancy, for those regularly wearing contact lenses it may cause additional discomfort. Typically this does not directly affect the visual acuity, but contact lens wearers may find their contacts uncomfortable.

If this type of discomfort while wearing contact lenses is experienced, it is advisable to contact a local eye care professional. They are able to assist in fitting a new pair of lenses for use during pregnancy. For some people, simply wearing glasses might be a solution to this problem.

After pregnancy, the shape of the eye as well as the blood pressure is likely to normalize. In some cases the eyes remain in their new shape post child birth, but this is normally no reason for concern.
