Signs of Labor - Dilation of Cervix

During real labor your cervix will begin to thin and soften (known as effacement) and dilate (open up).

Often women having regular painful contractions will be asked to come into hospital (or your midwife will attend if you are having a home birth) and you will have an internal examination to see if your cervix is opening.

Once it has reached about 4 - 5cm then you are considered to be in real labor and will probably be admitted to hospital. When the baby is ready to be born your cervix will be 10cm open.

Other Signs of Labor:

Diarrhoea

Vomiting

Increased Discharge/ Show

Backache

Contractions

Lightening

Rupture of the Membranes (Waters Breaking)
