Stem Cell Research - Organ and Tissue Regeneration

Because of the many obvious difficulties encountered when a patient requires a new organ or tissue, one of the things that most excites scientists about the potential uses of stem cells is the possibility of being able to grow new organs and tissues for patients that are an exact match to their own. In other words, organ and tissue regeneration is the holy grail of stem cell research.

Besides meaning that that people who would have required extensive treatment with anti-rejection medications would no longer have to live with taking such dangerous drugs for the rest of their lives, it would also wipe out the worry about the new organ or tissue being rejected by their body as it would be an exact match.

At present it is possible to grow some tissue in labs to help treat burns victims and although new replacement organs are still some way off, progress is being made in this area too.
