Stem Cells: What are Stem Cells?
Stem cells are a particular group of specialised cells which have the potential to develop into many different types of cells such as muscle, bone, organs, skin.
They normally come from either:
Embryonic Stem Cells, ie Embryos formed during the blastocyst phase of development.
or
Adult Stem Cells, ie cells taken from Adult Tissue
Stem cells are currently causing a great deal of excitement amongst scientists and researchers since they can possibly change current medical treatments of seriously ill patients.
However, there is also much controversy about how stem cells are obtained and how to justify their use amongst those who are against the practice.
