Treatments for Cervical Changes - Hysterectomy
Where all else has failed it may be necessary for you to agree to a hysterectomy. A hysterectomy removes both your womb and cervix and is usually only undertaken on women whose smear tests have been recurrently abnormal and showing severe cell changes. In most cases a hysterectomy will be carried out on women who have already completed their family, have reached menopause or who are suffering from other conditions such as fibroids or endometriosis.
Unlike other treatments for cervical changes a hysterectomy is a major operation and will require a long recuperation period. You will be operated under general anaesthetic and spend at least a week in hospital. Afterwards you will be given special advice about what you can and can't do once you return home. For example, you will be told not to exert yourself or to undertake strenuous exercise, lift anything heavy and even to avoid certain housework such as vacuuming, stretching to reach for items in high cupboards, washing floors and so on.
You will receive follow up care to ensure you are healing well and that none of abnormal cells have spread beyond the uterus.
