Breastfeeding and Sibling Rivalry

If you have just given birth to a new baby, then you should be prepared for some sibling rivalry when you introduce older siblings to the new arrival.

Naturally, they may find it difficult to understand why the new baby requires so much of your time. You should try to explain why the new baby needs so much attention and try to make some special time alone with your older children so that they don't feel left out; if possible, ask your partner to look after the baby for a little while.

When you are breastfeeding, try to include the other children as much as you can. Explain what you are doing and then read a story, sing songs or nursery rhymes or watch a television programme together.

Before long you may notice your other children role-playing at breastfeeding their toys. You will have allowed them to see breastfeeding as entirely natural. As a result they will be supportive of breastfeeding in the future!

The baby will also benefit as he will sense your pleasure together. He will love to hear you singing and talking to one another and he will soon learn how to charm his older siblings as a result!
