Considering Tandem Breasfeeding?
Sometimes mums find themselves facing another pregnancy, planned or otherwise, whilst they are still breastfeeding; in many cases they decide to contine breastfeeding throughout the new pregnancy.
In the past doctors advised against this, but nowadays it is believed that there is no need to stop breastfeeding during a pregnancy, unless of course a mother wants to, or she requires medication contra-indicated whilst breastfeeding.
When the new baby is born many mums who have breastfed throughout their pregnancy choose to breastfeed both children, rather than weaning the older sibling. Known as tandem breastfeeding, it is when a mum breastfeeds two or more children of different ages.
In a lot of ways tandem breastfeeding is similar to breastfeeding twins. And considering that breastmilk is made on a supply and demand basis there is no need to worry that the mum will not have enough milk for both children.
Tandem feeding can also be an effective way of preventing sibling rivalry or jealousies. When both siblings are sharing mum, then the older child will be less likely to worry about being replaced by the new baby!
