Benign Mesothelioma
Benign mesothelioma (or solitary/localized mesothelioma) is sometimes referred to as pleural fibroma and it is very rare. It is basically a benign or non-cancerous form of mesothelioma that develops sometimes in the lining of the reproductive organs or the lining of the lungs. It can affect both men and women although it is more often detected in men.
Benign mesothelioma is not life-threatening on its own. However, the fact that someone has it can indicate a risk factor for the future development of the cancerous forms of mesothelioma.
There are not usually any symptoms and it is not believed to be caused by exposure to asbestos although the cause as yet remains unknown. It is usually detected during an x-ray for something completely unrelated.
Benign mesothelioma does not spread into adjacent tissues so is easier to treat and control than malignant forms.
