How Asbestos Causes Asbestosis
Asbestos causes asbestosis because the fibres that compose asbestos are easily inhaled by people coming into contact with damaged or broken asbestos. These long crystal-like fibres then make their way into the lungs leading to irritation whch in the long term causes asbestosis symptoms.
Unfortunately your body cannot break down the fibres and the fluid it produces to try to do so ends up damaging the lungs. This causes asbestosis, an incurable and debilitating condition and can also lead to mesothelioma.
If you have know, or think you may have been exposed to asbestos in a previous or current job, then you should be aware that it is not just you who is at risk but also your close family and anyone else whom you may have been in contact with at the time you were exposed. Asbestos fibres stick to the clothes, shoes, skin and hair and this can lead to asbestosis and mesothelioma in people who have had any long term contact with the fibres.
