Stillbirth

What is Stillbirth?

Stillbirth, a term meaning "quiet birth", refers to the birth of a baby who has died during pregnancy, labor or delivery. It is a term often often used to distinguish the birth from that of a miscarriage or live birth. Sadly, the majority of stillbirths occur in full-term pregnancies.

In many cases the term "stillbirth" is reserved for those babies who have died during the middle of the second trimester right up until full-term. In the UK, "stillbirth" refers to babies delivered after 24 weeks gestation. However, in other parts of the world "stillbirth" is used to describe a baby who has died at any stage during pregnancy.
