Pregnancy Complications - Backache

Backache in pregnancy is very common and often is a result of the softening of ligaments caused by pregnancy hormones. Add to this the increasing weight of the growing baby and it's no surprise that pregnancy can cause backache. Another factor affecting pregnant women is that their centre of gravity is distorted meaning their balance is altered putting extra strain on muscles and ligaments supporting the spine.

Some women find gentle exercise helps, as can improving the posture as much as is reasonably possible. It's a good idea to have a look at yourself in a mirror when you are standing or sitting down to see how your posture is affected by pregnancy and straightening up a little.

Many mothers find swimming and walking or stretching exercises beneficial and many places have exercise regimes tailored especially for pregnant women, such as antenatal swimming classes and yoga.

If your backache is very troublesome a warm bath can help a little but you may need to see your doctor who can refer you for some physiotherapy if necessary. You may also be prescribed painkillers which are suitable for use in pregnancy.

Backache can be one of the signs of labor; if your backache comes on suddenly or is accompanied by any cramping, leaking fluid from the vagina or bleeding contact your midwife or doctor immediately or go straight to hospital.
