Causes of Miscarriage
One of the most common causes of early miscarriage, accounting for almost half of those that happen, is genetic problems which occured during fertilisation. Although distressing for the parents, it is normally a random occurence and does not mean the couple will have further problems conceiving and carrying a baby.
-
Immune problems, some serious infections and pregnancy hormonal imbalances may make miscarriage more likely.
-
The older a mother is, the higher her risk of miscarriage. This is because the eggs she produces are not as good a quality as those of a younger woman.
-
Drinking and smoking heavily increases the risk of miscarriage.
-
Another risk factor is carrying multiples, ie twins or more.
-
It is not known if leading a stressful lifestyle can cause miscarriage, although it has been shown in some studies to play a role.
-
The risk of miscarriage is slightly less if a woman has previously taken the contraceptive pill.
-
Moderate exercise and having sex whilst pregnant do not appear to be risk factors.
Unfortunately, for many couples, the cause of miscarriage is a mystery and the reason for it happening to them is never determined.
