1 Week Pregnant - Signs of Pregnancy
Mother
Since pregnancy is calculated from the first day of your last period, strictly speaking you aren't actually pregnant yet. This is the start of your period! And this is the date your doctor will use to calculate your baby's due date.
Before trying to conceive your should check with your GP whether any medications you or your partner are currently taking are safe. Also discuss any contraception you are currently on. If you are taking the Pill it is a good idea to have at least one natural period before getting pregnant as this makes it easier to calculate your dates. And consider whether or not there are any family conditions (on both sides of the family) that may be hereditary.
Baby
For both a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby, it is important to prepare for pregnancy well in advance. Before conception both mum and dad to be should be exercising regularly and eating a well-balanced diet containing plenty of oily fish, nuts and seeds which are high in essential fats. It's also advisable to quit smoking and taking illegal drugs including cannabis, and it's very wise to reduce your caffeine and alcohol intake.
Women should also take Folic Acid supplements both before and during the first twelve weeks of pregnancy as this significantly reduces the chances of babies being born with neural tube defects, such as Spina Bifida.
